flyhorizonbound sent: Hi! So, I wrote in to cosplaytutorial about Vrillyhoo, specifically the red plastic dome that holds the dice, and I was directed over here and told that you made a good one and were working on a tutorial. Any chance I could get some tips from you? Thanks a bunch!

Oh gosh, that’s really flattering! Wow! And more incentive for actually finishing that tutorial too (I’ve been really slow with it). But sure, no problem! I definitely had some issues with the red dome part.

In fact, I couldn’t find a completely round, transparent dome anywhere, so I went back to the source! Vrillyhoo is based off these bad boys. Which are technically called cornpoppers, apparently? Well, I just got one of those and took out the dome!

The dome had a bunch of little plastic tabs around the edges that kept it in place on the toy, and I cut those off with the help of some power tools.

But first you have to make it red of course. And all you have to do is dye it! I bought some RIT Scarlet Red Dye and boiled the dome in the dye for about an hour and a half. Just keep it in there until it gets to a color you’re happy with! It may also deform a bit, but not significantly (take it out before it can though)!

Wash it off and voilà, a lovely transparent Vrillyhoo dome! If you have anymore questions feel free to ask! ouo

Edit: Wow look what my friend found. This definitely would’ve helped me out! Hopefully this would stand up as well to dyeing!

Anonymous sent: Any tips on getting the teal strip onto the red skirt of Terezi's flarp outfit?

Sure!

Alright so first let me say that we were not able to add the teal strip to our Terezi’s skirt (Or the bottom of the vest) in time for the con we were attending, but we plan on adding it soon! So, technically none of this advice is from personal experience, but hopefully it will be of use!

I plan to use the method described here in this lovely tutorial about appliques. It does a very good job of explaining everything thoroughly I think! It might also be a bit tough finding that color of fabric but if all else fails, dyeing is an option, and not too much fabric is needed.

While I think that would be the best method, I’m guessing the teal strip could be sewn over the red fabric straight on, but it would be looser and would most likely seem less put together in the end.

Also, there can likely be good results with a very neat paint job. In which case, I would just use masking tape to surround the area I want to be the dark teal color, and then use fabric paint (Make sure you get matte colored!) around the edge of the skirt and the vest, using the tape boundaries to prevent mistakes and as much bleeding as possible. This would be hardest around the circular cut of the vest, but definitely still possible.

Bleeding might still occur though, and fabric paint is awful to get out, so I still recommend the applique tutorial first, but this is a far cheaper method if need be. Good luck!

FLARP Terezi Skirt Pattern & Skirt Slit Tutorial

A bit harder to explain than the vest because of the slit, so it’s a bit longer! The rest is under the cut below. I sewed the skirt according to my reference findings described here.

I hope it helps someone!

FLARP Terezi Vest Pattern

This is basically how I made my pattern.

I’m not sure how to go about describing it, but surely this could help someone?

I’d never made a pattern before so it was an adventure and a lot of measuring!

Kind of goes along with this post!

I don’t know how to armor so I drew various methods in hope of coming to a conclusion.

I did not but I used lots of colors.

I like colors.

Mintly’s Magical Guide to Cardboard Mastery

Cardboard is a really amazing material to work with, once you know how. At first it seems to be pretty useless—inflexible and weak. But the truth of the matter is that you really only need to know how to make it work with you, and then you have a medium with which you can do pretty much anything, including make lightweight, stable props!

So here’s my guide to basic methods of manipulating cardboard. Note: This is a beginner’s guide so it’s really simplified! But still, this should help someone out there with no idea where to start!

Redglare vs Redglare: A Tale of Two Cosplays

So recently my friend and I both worked hard on making our first cosplays! She decided she wanted to be FLARP Terezi, and so we did a lot of research to figure out, well, how to make it.

And what we found out can basically simmer down to the fact that FLARP Terezi and Neophyte Redglare actually have a lot of small differences in their outfits. And also that canon is confusing.

So here is my breakdown of those differences!
